Description

Musician and historian Stephen Wade talks with his friend Matt Brown about Stephen's musical beginnings, studying banjo with his mentor Fleming Brown in the 1970s, and his reflections on the Old Town School then and now. Since learning to play banjo at the school, Stephen has become a prominent folklorist, researcher and banjo player whose accomplishments include the one man show "Banjo Dancing" and his recent book, The Beautiful Music All Around Us. Matt Brown is a multi-instrumentalist and producer who teaches banjo and fiddle at the Old Town School. This conversation was recorded at the Chicago Cultural Center on April 13, 2017. Go to www.oldtownschool.org/StoryCorps to learn more and to listen to excerpts of other interviews collected as part of the StoryCorps-Old Town School partnership. Music: "Pateroller / Chinquapin Pie," as played by Stephen Wade (old-time banjo tune Fleming Brown learned from Hobart Smith)
